FIRST I WANT TO SAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY TO
echofades and
elapses, two of the most considerate and interesting people on my flist. I care about you guys so much that I can't put it into words, but thank you from the bottom of my tender heart for everything that you are and do - you've both had such an impact on my life and I'm so grateful to you. (ALSO ALEX BE AROUND MORE PLEASEEEEEE? I miss you.)
"To claim the identity of a 'fan' remains, in some sense, to claim an 'improper' identity, a cultural identity based on one's commitment to something as seemingly unimportant and 'trivial' as a film or TV series. Even in cultural sites where the claiming of a fan identity may seem to be unproblematically secure - within fan cultures, at a fan convention, say, or on a fan newsgroup - a sense of cultural defensiveness remains, along with a felt need to justify attachments." - Matt Hills in
Fan Cultures
Even though I understand it, it's pretty much my #1 fandom pet peeve, that reflexive defensiveness. I can't staaaaaand the overuses of lmao's at the end of sentences professing love/interest in something, like it's hilarious that you care (it's not, it's just awesome and admirable). And man, all that "maybe it's just me" or "I'm weird like that" or any variation on those sentiments - STOP MAN, we're ALL IN FANDOM, we all feel the same way about something or other, so no apology necessary. I have a lot of fandom confidence and I know not everyone is like that because there IS a huge stigma placed on what we spend our time on here, but I just wish that, even despite that, there weren't so much weebling and wobbling within our own safe community about these things that DO matter, no matter what greater society seems to imply.
And all that I just said? A little bit of BS when it comes to this one thing, so, whoop de doo I'm a hypocrite and I'm trying to overcome it.
( on making fanmixes )Relatedly, for the
Sons of Anarchy fans, I have the song from the season 1 finale that is rapidly climbing the ranks of my favorite music cues ever and may even take the number one spot. If I could ever become the type of person who has the idea to put this song with that scene, I would just - that would be the proudest moment of my life, I'm sure. It made me feel and think about so many things. It did exactly what I think is most important for a music cue to do - pull out the crucial elements and nuances of a scene and heighten their emotional impact without being distracting. And I tend to not be too into actual soundtracks being lyrically accurate, but the subtle ways in which this song was are perfect for this show.
Dude I beg you if you haven't seen this finale yet, do not listen to this song. I know some people have different responses to listening to stuff before it's used in a film or show, but if you're at all tempted just think of it as an early Christmas present to me to wait. Or if you do listen, just don't tell me. Hearing this for the first time as an accompaniment to the content of this most REMARKABLE scene - it was an incomparable experience that is totally burned into my brain.
